Welcome Brewster’s Newest Class: A Global Community of Thinkers, Dreamers, and Doers

There’s an unmistakable energy on campus this fall as Brewster welcomes 121 new students to our community. This year’s incoming class is one of our most dynamic yet, bringing together new students from 18 U.S. states and 19 countries around the world.

Our new Bobcats bring the best of diverse and curious minds, hailing from nearby New Hampshire and Connecticut, to as far away as Wyoming, Arizona, Washington, and California. Internationally, our new students have enthusiastically traveled from countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom, to name a few. This breadth of representation underscores Brewster’s identity as an international boarding school, one where students don’t just learn from their teachers, but from one another’s cultures, languages, and perspectives.

Our students also bring an incredible array of passions and pursuits to campus. Among the incoming class, you’ll find athletes joining high-level teams, musicians who have performed with professional ensembles, students eager to try new activities for the very first time, and young leaders ready to dive into debate, outdoor adventures, and creative arts. Whether it’s on the playing field, in the studio, or in the classroom, the incoming class is eager to make their mark.

New ninth grader Bailey Gross came to Brewster from Longmeadow, Mass. She shared her excitement about the start of the year: “What I like most so far are the teachers and the small class sizes. It feels like everyone knows you and wants you to succeed. My team leader, Mr. O, is funny, kind, and already one of my favorite teachers. It is so cool to be part of a class with students from all over the world. I have already met students from Mexico and Japan.”

With so many new faces, fresh perspectives, and bold ambitions, the start of this academic year marks an exciting chapter in Brewster’s ever-evolving story. To our new students and families: Welcome! And to our community of parents, alumni, and friends—thank you for helping us build the momentum by spreading the word about what makes Brewster such a vibrant, thriving school.

Dynamic History Duo Earn 2025 Kenison Faculty Awards

Each year, Brewster bestows its highest faculty honors with The Arthur Morris Kenison Faculty Award for Career Growth and The Arthur Morris Kenison Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Head of School Kristy Kerin revealed the 2025 Kenison recipients during her welcome remarks at Brewster’s All-School Meeting on September 2. Both honorees are from the History and Social Science Department: faculty member Sarah Inman and department chair Jonathan Browher.

Sarah Inman: Career Growth

Since joining Brewster in 2020, Sarah Inman has inspired students with her passion for history and her belief that “history is a way of seeing the world.” A graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Providence College, she teaches AP Human Geography and Ancient and Classical Worlds, while also serving as Community Life Parent for Goodwin Dorm and Head Instructor for Recreational Skiing and Snowboarding.

Ms. Inman’s classrooms are known for energy, connection, and intellectual curiosity. She loves helping students make links between the past and their own lives, igniting new enthusiasm for learning. Ms. Inman also brings her background in archives and theater into her teaching, creating a dynamic, multidisciplinary approach that resonates deeply with her students. Her work exemplifies the very best of education at Brewster: nurturing curiosity and empowering young people to see their world in new ways.

In one Spring Evaluation just a few months ago, a student wrote, “Ms. Inman is one of my favorite teachers and I think that is because she knows what she is doing and knows how to make the class actually entertaining. She makes it so you can understand the topic and also have fun with your classmates.”

Ms. Inman admits she was not expecting her name to be called for the Career Growth Award, but at the All-School Meeting, as Ms. Kerin was describing the Kenison Faculty Growth Award winner and building anticipation, she said, “Students know that she cares deeply about their learning and their growth and her joy for her subject ignites high engagement in all of her students. When traveling in Spain her students would often step into historic sites and say ‘Wow! Ms. Inman is going to love this.”

“When Kristy said this,” Ms. Inman said, “I knew for sure that she was talking about me. I was absolutely moved to tears! I have loved watching my students make new connections and become more interested in history during our time together in Cádiz, Spain.” Ms. Kerin also noted the honoree’s work with the Thai Scholars program in the summer. “This was my sixth summer teaching with the Thai scholars and this year will be my fourth year heading to Cádiz,” Ms. Inman said.

“Few are more deserving of this award than Sarah,” fellow Kenison honoree Jon Browher shared after the announcement. “She has led the 9th grade team in cultivating a culture of care and growth for our newest learners, in a new environment, many who are away from home for the first time. She both challenges and supports her students, with a holistic approach that prioritizes their perspectives, learning styles, and unique opportunities for growth and challenge.” Mr. Browher complimented Ms, Inman on her integration of geography, religion, history, and texts, saying that has led to positive learning outcomes for students through to the upper school, adding, “I am excited for the opportunity she has in AP Human Geography to survey the growth many of her seniors have had since she taught them as 9th graders.”

Jonathan Browher: Excellence in Teaching

For Jonathan Browher, this year marks a banner chapter in his 14-year Brewster career. In addition to receiving the Kenison Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, he was named the 2025 New Hampshire State History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Mr. Browher teaches U.S. History and AP U.S. History, where his classes emphasize hands-on inquiry and analysis of primary sources. He is widely admired for balancing rigor with creativity, pushing students to think critically while also tailoring lessons to their unique strengths. His influence extends far beyond his classroom: Mr. Browher serves as Brewster’s Outdoor Skills Coordinator, is an assistant Alpine ski coach, and completed American Mountain Guides Association climbing instructor training. He is also a Community Life Parent in Vaughan, presented at regional and national conferences, and plays active leadership roles in the Lakes Region community, including with the Castle Preservation Society and the Wolfeboro Area Children’s Center.

“It’s a tremendous honor and so meaningful to receive this award, especially from the teachers who I work with every day,” Mr, Browher said. “Many of my values as an educator, and experiences in the community, have been shaped by my time here at Brewster. Opening night All-School on the new turf, under the clear and crisp twilight sky, was the perfect setting for us all to come together for the first time to make another year of memories. It certainly was a memorable night for me. I'll most remember the excitement of many of my former and current students, and colleagues, I've had some impact on over my time here, and who have impacted my teaching.”

Students and alumni attest to his transformative teaching. One former student, uncertain about her ability to succeed in AP U.S. History, recalls that Mr. Browher “went out of his way to ensure I was supported and could succeed,” adapting his instruction so she could shine. Stories like this underscore the power of his approach—and the lasting confidence his students carry with them.

Reflecting on his work, Mr. Browher emphasizes that history isn’t about memorizing facts, but about learning how to think. “If students can question, evaluate, and make meaning for themselves, they’ll be ready for whatever comes next,” he says.

Together, Ms. Inman and Mr. Browher embody the spirit of the Kenison Awards—educators who are deeply committed to their students, their craft, and the wider community. Their work strengthens the History and Social Science Department and, more broadly, the learning culture at Brewster.


The History of the Awards

Brewster’s Career Growth and Excellence in Teaching awards are named for the late Arthur M. Kenison, Ph.D, who served devotedly on Brewster’s Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1999 as the chair of the board finance committee. The Kenison family has strong and lasting ties to Brewster: Arthur’s grandfather, also Arthur, was Brewster Class of 1899. His uncles, Frank ’25 and Arthur ’30, were also Board members, and his father Samuel was Class of 1927. Brewster's library is dedicated to the Kenison Family legacy and the Keinson House dorm is named after Arthur ’30 and his wife Doris. It is an appropriate honor to name two of Brewster’s most prestigious awards after a man who devoted himself to ensuring a sound foundation for the school his family loved so dearly.

Bradley House - Our Newest Dorm Named for Class of ’14 Alumnus

In August, Brewster purchased Topsides Bed & Breakfast, a stately house located at 209 South Main Street next to Anderson Hall. Going forward, the gracious five bedroom home will be transformed into a beautiful new dormitory. Head of School Kristy Kerin shared that in addition to a new life, the building will also have a new name. “The names of our alumni are associated with so many good works and deeds, and now, another alumnus’s name will forever be part of our campus map. I am pleased to announce that Brewster’s newest dorm will be named Bradley House—named for Bradley Grayson, a Class 2014 Brewster graduate.

Bradley’s father, Peter, is a longtime Brewster Trustee. “Our family is connected to Brewster for so many reasons, not the least of which is Bradley’s positive experience here on campus,” Peter shared. “I’m so pleased we could help Brewster acquire this premier property.”

Since graduating from Brewster in 2014, Bradley earned a bachelor’s degree from Hobart & William Smith Colleges. After college, he worked in sales and marketing before pursuing a career in finance. He currently works for Merrill Lynch in New York City.

When the Inn’s owners retired this spring, Brewster had the opportunity to purchase the property and expand our dorm offerings. The building required minimal interventions to transition from an inn to a dormitory. The community life parent will live in the innkeepers’ apartment. The former owners’ den will become a cozy dorm common room. Wireless internet and access control doors will be added to complete the transition. Kerin expressed her thanks to the Facilities and IT departments for coordinating the work. “They made a plan in short order, ensuring that the new building will be ready to welcome students this fall.”

The gift from the Grayson Family that made the Topsides purchase possible is just the most recent example of their dedication to Brewster. The Grayson Student Center was so named because of Peter’s founding gift to the Reimagine Rogers project—and the resulting space has quickly become the heart and hub of our creative, artistic, and innovative programs. Likewise, the Grayson Performing Arts Center in Anderson Hall is home to All School meetings and community concerts, musicals, and events.

Kerin expressed her deep appreciation to the Grayson Family: “I can’t thank the Graysons enough for their commitment and vision. The impact they have made at Brewster cannot be overstated. I look forward to generations of students being able to live, learn, and build lasting friendships together in Bradley House.”

Bryce Richmond Guides Team USA to Historic Gold at IIJL U16s

This summer brought a unique experience for Brewster boys’ lacrosse Head Coach Bryce Richmond, who returned from the International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) World U16 Lacrosse Championship in East Aurora, New York, as part of a history-making Team USA staff. For the first time, the U.S. U16 squad earned gold in this premier box lacrosse event.

The IIJL World Championships are the top global event for young box lacrosse players, drawing elite teams and coaches from across North America and beyond. The 2025 U16 tournament, held at The Classic Rink just outside Buffalo, exposed young athletes to high-stakes international competition and gave coaches an invaluable chance to collaborate and grow.

Richmond joined the USA U16 coaching staff after regularly expressing his interest to the head coach at Eaglebrook School, where the team's training camps were held. Through this professional connection and consistent outreach over two years, he was invited to fill a spot when it became available—an opportunity he embraced for both professional development and to learn from experienced colleagues in the indoor game.

“I didn’t have a ton of indoor experience,” Richmond says. “So it was more of a professional development opportunity—to really learn from the other guys on staff and see this side of the game.”

Although new to the indoor game, Richmond brings ample lacrosse experience. After competing as a two-year captain and standout defenseman at Elmira College—where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees—he launched his coaching career at his alma mater as assistant coach and defensive coordinator. He went on to lead the boys’ varsity lacrosse program at Tilton School, helping establish its foundation, before joining Brewster as Associate Head Coach and now, this year, Head Coach.

His coaching experience no doubt helped contribute to Team USA’s success. After going undefeated in group play, beating both the Canadian team and the NAMLA team, composed of players from Seneca Nation, the team won the rematch against Canada in the championship with a score of 13-8 to bring home the gold medal.

After his time with Team USA, Richmond is eager to bring home the lessons he learned. “There are a lot of aspects as a coach you can bring from indoors to outdoors,” he said, citing increased composure under pressure and sharper technical skills as key takeaways. He’s eager to implement some of the new drills and skills training he picked up from the experience.

Some elements of coaching, however, transcend the differences between indoor and outdoor lacrosse. Chief among them are Richmond’s philosophy and the values he instills in his players. Reflecting on the intensity of competition, he recalled, “My ending note at all times in the locker room was to have fun and play with a smile on your face. Yes, it might be stressful, but at the same time, you’re playing a game that you love, and that’s the most important thing.”

With his first full season as head coach underway, Richmond is energized to lead with values at the forefront. “My mantra for the team this year is ‘CATS’—Character, Attitude, Toughness, and Service. At the end of the day, we want to win championships, but it’s really about building better men and preparing them for life after Brewster.”

Meet the Faculty: Joe Scala-Harbert ’16

Joe Scala-Harbert ’16 is new to the World Languages faculty, but he’s not new to Brewster. A graduate of the Class of 2016 and one of eight in his family to attend Brewster, he is thrilled to be back on campus, working and learning through a different lens. Mr. Scala-Harbert spent the last five years at Tilton School, a boarding school also in the Lakes Region.He says the support and dedication of the network of people he stayed connected with over the years inspired his move back to Wolfeboro. Here at Brewster, in addition to teaching French, he will step in as the Assistant Crew Coach for the Fall and Spring seasons. We asked this seasoned Bobcat (and new dad!) a few questions to get to know him a little better.

Q. Welcome back to Brewster! What does it feel like to be back on campus as a teacher?

A. Being a teacher at Brewster feels like a full circle moment! I love the vibe and structure and am loving how I can teach and coach what I love. It’s also nice knowing where everything is!

Q. The new year has just started and we have 120 new students on campus. What is your advice to them if they are feeling nervous? 

A. My advice to new students this year: Embrace this new journey! Being a part of Brewster means so much more than just being a student. You’re a part of a family of thousands who walked in the same shoes at one point. Take charge of this opportunity and you won’t regret it.

Q. Your devotion to the study of French runs deep. What first drew you to the language and what do you admire most about French culture? 

A. My deep passion for the French language began at Brewster. I fell in love with it almost from the start. After Brewster I decided to study it in college which opened numerous doors for me. I joined and started multiple student organizations that focused on language learning, culture, and travel. I traveled to Canada, Italy, and France, learning more about the foundations of French and how to teach it. I appreciate the diversity of the French language, it is spoken on six of the seven continents and has massive relevance in New England, specifically, New Hampshire.

Q. You’re on the board of the New Hampshire Association of World Language Teachers (NHAWLT). What does that group do? 

A. I first heard of NHAWLT while attending their annual conference while in college. I joined their board in 2024 and have been an active member of multiple committees and am currently the chair of their communications and media committee. I presented at their annual conference and was able to bring two advanced students with me to co-present the topics and themes we were learning in class. NHAWLT’s mission states that they will “serve and represent all New Hampshire World Language Teachers.” I am incredibly proud to be a part of this board and hope I can represent French and Brewster well while serving on it.

Q. We know French is your passion. Do you speak any other languages? What language would you love to add to your linguistic resume?

A. I currently can only speak English and French but I would love to learn Italian and Japanese in this lifetime!

Q. You and your husband Clay are new parents…congratulations! Would you like to share any fun or precious new dad moments? 

A. Our son Dean was born this past May and has lit up our world! He is such a curious and happy baby, and of course we are biased, but we think he is pretty cute. We are excited to see him grow up on campus.

Q. Do you have any favorite memories from your days as a Brewster student that you can share? And are any of your former teachers or coaches now your colleagues?

A. One of my favorite memories didn’t start off as a favorite at the time. I remember now how nice morning crew practices were. The water was so calm, the sun was beautiful, and I felt like it was an amazing and unique way to start the day. I am so excited to be working with some of my old teachers, even though I wasn’t taught by some of them, I have stayed in touch over the years. This is not a complete list but it has been great working with TJ Palmer (my team leader!), Barb Thomas, Kim Yau, Janice Cornwell, Katie Gardner,  Yu Lui, and Allie DeFilippo.

Q. Please describe your perfect work day and your perfect day off.

A. The goal in my classroom is to encourage students to be dynamic and invested learners. French requires dedication, attention to detail, and a willingness to make mistakes and have fun. So all of that goes into my perfect work day. My perfect day off looks like taking a drive or a walk with Dean and Clay, exploring new stores, restaurants, and places in nature. I am also content staying home all day!

Q. Weird closing question: Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible and why?

A. I think I would rather fly, it would help me get over my fear of heights!

Q. Okay, I lied, I have one more question:  What music/artists/songs are you enjoying these days?

A. These days, I am really into Lo Fi as a genre and a toss up between Morrissey and Blanco White as artists.

Bobcat Open Golf Tournament

Proceeds from this event directly support student scholarships. The growth and success of more than one third of our students are made possible by this financial support. Grandparents’ Day
